For this image, I thought a great deal about Pablo Picasso, who was obsessed with the figure of the Minotaur. Only, I thought of it after finishing the painting, when I noticed the surprise in a girl’s face—a face with almost animal features. My original intention was romantic… but the beauty of a painting often lies in how, despite the artist’s attempts to invent a subject, the subject itself emerges as it pleases, not as the maker commands. Art is 20% invention and 80% discovery!
